Technology Journal 4

Personally, I don’t read many science fiction texts, but as for movies and games, there is an underlying theme that technology is a good thing until it falls into the wrong hands. This can be said for a lot of things, such as guns, prescription medicine, etc. The cultural value that is very prevalent is ethics, that we expect people to do the right thing with the technology at their fingertips.

The example that is clear in my mind is in the video game Final Fantasy 7, when Shinra Corporation has tapped into the life stream (life force) of the planet and were using it to power cities and make life easier for people, until they turned it into a weapon, which resulted in almost everything being destroyed and many people becoming infected from the nuclear-like fallout called Geostigma.

Although technology can be so helpful and advancements in technology could change the world for the better, there is always the ethics behind it. Once something is developed for the good of humanity and someone discovers a harmful use for it, there is only a matter of time before someone will use it to harm others. Although there is a risk developing new technologies, there is a needed precaution in doing so because it may result in more harm than good.
