Technology Journal 3

Imagination plays a huge role in technical communication because one must “imagine” the audience they are trying to relay their information to. By “imagine”, I mean that one must think about what sort of people they are trying to communicate with, for example, a computer scientist isn’t going to send an email to an average person with computer jargon they wouldn’t understand. The result of that is thinking outside the box, to better communicate your point/information to le audience.

Having a critical mind is also very important to technical communication because one must ponder what information needs to be included and decide what not to include. An example of this would be a professional cook writing about how to cook eggs, most likely will include basic instructions on what seasonings to use and tell the audience to crack the egg into a pan. The professional cook isn’t going to include how to crack an egg or what to crack it on. The ability to discern the importance of information to relay to any audience in a business/technical setting is imperative to its success. That doesn’t mean following procedures in technical communication is not important because there needs to be structure to support it all. Imagination, having a critical mind and having standard operating procedures are all important aspects of technical communication. Having a set way of performing tasks/relaying information, being able to discern what information to include in your standards of communication, and being able to think outside of the box to come up additional problems one might encounter, what ways to relay the information to said audience, etc. all go hand in hand.
